The ANSSI and the CNIL put it this way:<\/p><ul><li><strong>3<\/strong> copies of the data: the original and two backups.<\/li><li><strong>2<\/strong> different media, so that a single fault does not take them out together.<\/li><li><strong>1<\/strong> offline copy, on a medium disconnected from any information system.<\/li><\/ul><p>Many presentations replace \u201coffline\u201d with \u201coffsite\u201d. Both are useful and they are not the same thing: an offsite copy remains reachable by an attacker if it is online with the same credentials. The ANSSI accepts an online offsite copy under certain conditions, but considers the offline copy essential, even if it is made less often.<\/p><p>Since ransomware began encrypting reachable backups as well, the rule has been extended with:<\/p><ul><li><strong>1<\/strong> immutable or offline copy that the everyday administrator cannot delete;<\/li><li><strong>0<\/strong> unnoticed errors: failed jobs trigger an alert, and a restore is attempted.<\/li><\/ul><p>Two disks in the same NAS count as a single risk: theft, fire, compromised administrator account. So do two providers in the same building, if fire is the scenario being considered.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aef7697 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"aef7697\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>The number of dates<\/h2><p>A single copy, overwritten every night, is not a history. On the day the nightly copy already contains the corrupted file, there is nothing left to restore.<\/p><p>For an SME, a common and sufficient set is:<\/p><ul><li>one restore point a day for 30 days;<\/li><li>one restore point a week for 8 to 12 weeks, if errors are discovered late;<\/li><li>one restore point a month in the archive, for the documents that must be kept.<\/li><\/ul><p>That amounts to around thirty daily versions, not thirty complete full copies: incremental backups store only the changes. The number of versions is decided based on the RPO and the detection time, not a magic number. Measure a real week before fixing the volume you purchase.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3cdc888 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3cdc888\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>When you have too many<\/h2><p>Hundreds of restore points that have never been restored, on a local disk that anyone can erase, give a false sense of security. The criterion is not the number displayed in the console. It is: \u201cfrom how many independent media can I restore a file from twenty days ago?\u201d Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr, the French government&#8217;s cybercrime assistance platform, reminds you to check regularly that backups work by actually restoring data.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7a13188 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7a13188\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wdb-g-brand\"><h2>At WeDoBack<\/h2><p>Each backup is stored outside the production network, encrypted, and made redundant across several servers. The customer sets retention within the limits of the volume. A thirty-day history often weighs two to four times the usable volume, depending on how often files change.<\/p><\/details><details><summary>Is an offline copy really necessary if I have a cloud backup?<\/summary><p>The ANSSI considers it essential, even if it is made less often than the others, and regards it as more robust than an online copy. If you cannot maintain a media rotation, an immutable online copy, which no one can delete for a set period, is the compromise the same guide considers.<\/p><\/details><details><summary>How many copies for Microsoft 365?<\/summary><p>The same logic applies: the data in Microsoft 365, plus at least one copy outside the tenant, under different credentials.
